Checking Snow Day Probability: Step-by-Step Guide
This youtube video tutorial shows you how to check the of a snow day using correct weather data and prediction indicators. Each step is explained in a simple way, including snowfall forecasts, temperature trends, overnight freezing conditions, and the probability of local school closures.
How to Know the Possibility of School Closures on Snowy days
The decision is made by school officials or the superintendent before 5 am. But, generally it depends on the circumstances given below.
- 1. Timing of the Storm: Heavy snow during the morning, like 5 AM - 8 AM is the common reason for a school closure. Schools are less likely to close if an overnight storm ends by 3 a.m. because that’s easier for road construction crews to manage.
- 2. Freezing Rain: This is a dangerous situation, as a thin layer of ice is more dangerous than several inches of snow because it makes roads slippery for buses, cars and pedestrians.
- 3. Wind and Visibility: Heavy snowfall and winds make travel unsafe, no matter how clear the roads are. This is a major factor in rural and open areas.
- 4. Extreme Cold: In the coldest areas, schools may close if the air temperature drops below -40° F/C. Because children can be at risk of frostbite while waiting for the bus.
How accurate is our snow day prediction
Our snow day predictions are based on the OpenWeatherMap data source, which provides temperature, snowfall, wind speed and historical data. We strive for accuracy, but our estimates should be used as a guide rather than a guarantee.
Disclaimer:
This snow day calculator provides estimates based on historical data and current weather conditions. The final decision for school closures always rests with school administrators and local authorities.
